February Rep Council Meeting Notes

NTL Rep Council Meeting Notes Feb. 6, 2017

No meeting was held in January due to weather cancellations.

Under Secretary’s Correspondence, Maria Ryan reported that Union City Little League is looking for sponsors. NEF, that directly helps students and teachers, also requested a donation. The council decided to make a donation to the Ecumenical Food Bank in March, since holiday donations are probably depleted. The treasurer will check her records to see what the NTL gave for donations last year and will e-mail reps prior to the next rep council meeting.
In his President’s Report, George reported that the CEA was recently audited and should be every year. They have offered to come for on-site audits of local unions.
Teachers at Central Avenue Preschool got the copies back of the Code of Responsibility and Supervision that they signed, but not the originals.
Teachers at the high school were asked for their opinion of the “perfect” reoganization of the NHS administrators. Some interviews have taken place; the population of the HS is down. A creative solution may be needed.
George and Ed attended a New Haven County Forum (held three times per year) on Thursday. On the topic of Legislative Agenda, some 7,000 proposals are up for discussion, not all of them favorable.
CEA/RA will be May 5-6, 2017 NEA/RA will be June 29-July 5, 2017 in Boston.
Read Across America is March 2, 2017 and teachers can get materials from the CEA website.
The New Teachers Conference will be April 1 in Groton. NTL will cover the fees for teachers with seven or less years of experience who wish to attend.
UNISERVE rep Mike Breen is leaving and Jeff Mockler, with 25-30 years of experience, will return to be our sixth representative.
The Right to Work concept would allow teachers to opt out of the union.
We would like to host an “adopt a school” meeting, as the Waterbury Teachers’ Credit Union does, at each school. We would share some of the benefits of being a CEA member.
No grievances were reported; contact building reps with any issues. Cheryl Campbell reminded everyone to keep her current on teachers leaving and coming in so that membership is up to date.
The NTL website is up and running and a paper newsletter will be coming out soon.
